A valid point but it is a bit of a misconception that industry does not fund/invest in basic research of the same kind/caliber as Academia. In fact they do but it is much less well known. Much of this has to do with the disencentivization and/or outright prohibition of publication of the work. I also think their is a general hesitancy on the part of many publicly traded companies to advertise the amount of money they spend on basic research as investors generally frown upon work they see as “wasteful” or not directly tied to new product development in the short term. I must emphasize I have no evidence of this.
