And how do we extract knowledge from something? Typically we do this through an analysis of that thing. So another way we could put this is: Data ‘science’ is the analysis of data. The analysis of data is not science, it is a part of science, it is a thing which almost all actual scientists do every day as part of the normal course of doing science. However, it is only a small part of science, a crucial part no doubt, but ultimately only a part. A part of a thing cannot be that thing. This is only one reason why data ‘science’ is not science or ‘a science’ or a ‘type of science’ or a ‘field of science.” There are many, many, many other reasons as I have written about extensively in the past.
