Yet another unintended consequence of the death of local journalism, Americans falling prey to Russian disinformation. Add it to the still growing list along with drops in civic participation resulting in the end of good citizenship. In retrospect it should have been obvious. The power of local journalism to shape our lives was awe inspiring. What did we expect would happen when this super influential, major focal point of most peoples lives was suddenly gone? Most American’s simply did not know what to do with the extra 2–4h a day that they used to dedicate to local journalism. Oh well, maybe someday we will figure out how to live in a world bereft of the power and majesty that was local journalism.
On top of that we are so poor and shit now in America what with all our crumbling infrastructure and such what else is there to do but watch Russian state television and fantasize about how great it would be to live in Putin’s Russia. We have no one to blame but ourselves and the death of local journalism of course, and those sneaky Ruskies. How did they get so smart? Probably because they have robust local journalism. If only we still did.
