Everyone seems so sure about this. Count me as not convinced. I will happily reverse my position the first time I meet an AI in person. Alternatively if you are suggesting that this “act of creation” may occur sometime in the next 500 years or so I can (mostly) accept it, though it is still not a sure thing in my view.
Great response though Mike. I am happy to see that, while I would be hard pressed to call you an optimist, at least the glass is 1/25th full and disaster and death for all is not assured. It is all too easy to fall into despair and give up hope if one focuses almost exclusively on the present. There has always been, and will most likely always will be, some terrible thing happening here or somewhere. Likewise terrible governments run by horrible and/or incompetent people have ruled in the past and will no doubt arise again in the future. People like you and me lived through those times, and there were prognosticators of doom among them, just as today. The collapse of America has always been coming and it may even be true that we have and do still deserve to collapse. Yet, here we sit, apparently in the midst of this collapse having a civil conversation on a two bit website in the backwaters of the internet without fear of reprisal or worry of what we say. At least there’s that.
