Great piece. There is one area where a beautiful picture can still make money, technical photography. Everyone might have access to sophisticated photo editing and camera technology, but very few have access to high end microscopes and the education and training needed to use them. Space/telescope photography is similar though the barrier to entry for great space photos is actually much lower than for microbiology. Anybody can point a telescope into space, not many know how to culture a fungus and prepare it to capture images like below.
