I had a sinking feeling I would get this type of response which is why I included several caveats and spots where I tried to emphasize that most of this post was purely hypothetical. For instance: (note: This entire paragraph is purely hypothetical and only for purposes of this post. I do not know if this is true and it is possible, probable even that it is not. This is an argument you will hear people make and make with conviction.), and others.
I do not have much confidence in the human race and our abilities and do not think we would end up as lone survivors should the worst come to past in terms of climate change and its impacts. In fact I think it is quite clear (the honeybee is just one example) that we sink or swim as a planet together with the plants and animals we share the earth with. Mass extinction events would eventually make life on earth unsustainable no matter the technological achievements of the remaining inhabitants.
That said there are people who do believe this, who do think we can tech our way out of disaster. They are wrong and I think the evidence is incontrovertible on that point. That however is a topic for another post/ In this one I was trying to draw attention to or rather ask a question about humanity and our position vis a vis evolution and natural selection. Are we still prey to its whims or not? Do we still have to “worry” about it or not? Can we still evolve naturally or not? It is a difficult question to ask and an even harder one to answer. I do not think I hit the nail very much on the head with this attempt but nothing ventured nothing gained.
