Over a year ago, there was a period when I, and many others, were getting up to 50 new followers per day. This went on for a while, quickly ran up huge numbers, and then ceased. I feel sure that this was some sort of manipulation by Medium to make it seem larger and denser quickly. I don’t know the how, bots have been suggested, but it’s easier to imagine the why. At some point, Medium will be sold or go public. No doubt its size will be a factor in its valuation.
I remember that time so well. Hard to believe it was over a year ago. That was when I first picked up three of my most loyal and hardcore followers/superfans, Uranus Yoda, Ucaca Wa, and Open Championship 2017. Gosh we had such wacky adventures together. Good times indeed.

My own theory is spam bot based and has to do with CEO Ev Williams. You may recall that just before the follower spam bot-athon he was becoming a follower of a large number of writers on the site, something he had not done previously (to my knowledge). I like to flatter myself and think that he personally selected a bunch of writers he happened to like, became a follower, and then through that link in injected the bots into the system mostly focused on the writers he had become a follower of. In reality it was probably a totally random process and Ev may not even have been aware of what was happening. Any number of employees at Medium could have set up and executed the bot infiltration. I personally don’t think it was intended to go as far as it did and believe it may have been an experiment that got out of control.
