I think it is because we are idiots. We think that machines can learn even though the term is made up of two words that when combined in that order result in a logical contradiction. Also, it is a logical impossibility which makes it nonsense. We can’t find fulfilling work because we think that throwing around logically contradictory nonsense terms for the purposes of hype generation is a good idea. Maybe we (the humans) need to spend more time doing some actual learning. Dictionary reading is a good place to start. The cool thing about dictionaries is that they contain many definitions of things, including words like ‘machine’ and ‘learning’. If we read them and understand them we will learn how to use the words correctly, instead of in ways that violate both the laws of logic and common sense. That would be kind of neat, and truly fulfilling, at least for me.
