I wish I knew who this mysterious “we” who are so worried were. The only people I ever hear express any “worries” about AI are the same people who have continually misled or outright lied about its existence (it does not) and abilities (those of a modern computer). I am sorry if I am not quaking in my boots in fear when I am told I should be afraid by people who can’t even recognize that one of their favorite buzzterms, ‘machine learning’ is a logical contradiction and something which is logically impossible. Machines can’t learn, for if they did they would no longer be machines. (Don’t bother with the but we don’t really mean ‘learning’ as in ‘learning’ thing. I have heard it a million times already, you do mean it as ‘learning’ and machines cannot by definition ever do it).
Unfortunately, you may be 100% correct in your fears, but at this point the technology community has cried wolf so many times, you can’t blame people for tuning them out. They have been wrong over and over again about AI, actually since it was first proposed as something that might someday be possible way back in the 1950s. Hundreds of hedge terms later (machine learning, deep learning, special intelligence, systems of intelligence, etc.), and there is still no AI actually existing anywhere above, on, or below the surface of the earth. AI hypists have bloviated there way into irrelevance. Write this article again in 500 years when (some people think possibly) an AI actually is created/born/emerges. Alternatively, if you rewrote the article and eliminated the term machine learning and substituted the word AI with ‘modern computing techniques’ you might be on to something, and at least you would have my attention.
