In my mind this debate ended almost exactly 15 years ago with the publication of M.R. Bennett and P.M.S. Hacker’s groundbreaking book Philosophical Foundations of Neuroscience. Materialists/physicalists lost, and lost decisively. They have yet to recover and maybe never can. The great irony is that the materialists did it to themselves not through bad science or wrong facts, but rather by the continual and ongoing use of logically fallacious reasoning and arguments. Now the same trap of logical problems that bedeviled and ultimately sunk the materialist neuroscientists has been fallen into by the computer scientists of today. The mereological fallacy has become the compulogical fallacy. Strange how history repeats itself.
