In our defense I do not believe this nor do I think most everyday working research scientists do. As in many professions the public face is often very different from the workaday life. I would suggest this is even more pronounced in the case of scientists who are most often reserved and humble in their approach to socializing (yes I am generalizing big time). Therefore any scientist who does become known to the public and actively seeks out such acknowledgement is an outlier in more ways than one.
