It is actually much bigger than a PR problem, it is a reality problem for there is no such thing. AI does not currently, and may never, exist. What is referred to as AI or deep learning or machine learning or special intelligence or systems of intelligence or whatever techno-hype term you prefer to use, is nothing more than computing as it has always been but slightly more sophisticated. It is a set of software that uses different algorithms from what have previously been the standard, in a hardware format (artificial neural networks often) that attempts to mimic what one current theory postulates about how certain types of learning may happen in the human brain. Leaving aside the fact that the theory may be wrong, and that other competing theories exist and are just as plausible, there is absolutely nothing “intelligent” happening in your computer. It is computing just as it always has only with different lines of code then before. Machine learning (often used interchangeably with AI) is a made up term that was only invented as a hedge when AI researchers realized true AI was impossible. Machines can’t learn, machines don’t learn, machines do what machines have always done execute commands and follow instructions. The only thing they have “learned” is a different way to analyze input data and generate output data that relies on algorithms that attempt to mimic the hypothetico-deductive process in human reasoning. Neat stuff, useful even, not learning, not even close. Most absolutely, definitely, not intelligent. Fear of artificial intelligence is a lot like fear of ghosts. I do not doubt many people are afraid but their fear is unfounded and irrational. We do not propose a PR blitz on behalf of ghosts to assuage people’s fear of them, why should we propose it for AI?
