Mathematics and data science share one very important trait, neither are science. Both are tools of science, important and powerful tools to be sure, but not science. I do not understand why mathematicians are content to recognize that their own field is not science while data ‘scientists’ continue to misrepresent what they are/do as science when it quite clearly is not. As I have said many times this is no value judgement pro or con. It is simply a statement of the fact of the matter. I have tried to explain why this is the case in words so many different ways but I think I never captured it more clearly than in the infographic linked below.
