microorganisms too and yes that fact does continually frustrate bio and microbiological research. Interestingly enough I think it frustrates other (non bio) scientists even more. I cannot tell you how many times some analytical chemist will ask me exasperatedly why I cant just tell them “exactly” how long it will take a certain microbe to grow in some particular growth medium or the precise number of bacterial cells in a given sample. I also get “Why is everything always an estimate? why cant the LOD be a specific number? So you are telling me the CV is 0.5 logs, holy shit!” quite a bit.
