So now what is essentially a search engine for books is an artificial intelligence. For Pete’s sake before you know it any modern computer that does anything remotely computer-like is going to be hailed as the birth of some new “form” of artificial intelligence. Incidentally to date the ‘form’ of AI that we have gotten has been ‘not AI.’ As of today there are still a grand total of zero actual AI’s anywhere on, above, or below the surface of the earth. Natural language processing is not intelligence, artificial or otherwise, it is natural language processing. It is not understanding language or meaning of language, which many consider a requirement of (human level) intelligence. Forget human level intelligence our current so called AI’s are still barely past glow worm stage and I think that is giving them way too much credit.
At base this so called AI is a series of computations written into algorithms using advanced mathematical and statistical techniques. All the way at base it is math. Unless you equate math with intelligence this is not artificial intelligence, it is a computer which is really good at math. Yeah! Another one. They keep getting better and faster at math every year and have since their inception. Guess what, they are still not intelligent. An infinitely powerful mathematical calculation machine that could solve any math program ever conceived would still not be intelligent, it would be the universe’s best ever calculator. Surely a marvel indeed, but not intelligent, not even close.
