The New Intelligence
If you are going to say so many things that are demonstrably incorrect and factually inaccurate you better leave yourself a lot of escape hatches. That way when the statements are inevitably disproved and the predictions fail to come to pass the author can point to his own words and say…see I never said that, I said. “…may be coming to an end” or maybe not….I said ”moving us toward”…I never said how long it would take to get there. Even better begin the article by describing how previous similar predictions failed to come to pass and that way when your own also makes you look foolish you can say..”but look at all these other people before me who also were completely wrong. I’m not the only one.” Clearly this is an author with the conviction of a true believer. A true believer in protecting his reputation.
I for one can’t wait for the day when I can quit my job because AI’s are designing and running all my experiments for me. Sorry, they will be so smart of course that they won’t have to actually run any experiments as they will already have all the answers. With all that big data out there just waiting to be analyzed who needs to generate any more with waste of time “experiments” and boring old “bench work.” I am surprised they don’t already have all the answers what with all the AIs that currently exist today. I can’t walk down the street without bumping into one of these AIs. They are freakin everywhere. In my phone, my city’s traffic light system, my car. It’s nuts I tell ya. I must have seen a hundred of the damn things hanging out down on the street corner the other day just shooting the shit and solving all the remaining great unanswered problems of philosophy and mathematics in under 2 microseconds. What a utopia we live in now that AIs have come into existence. Is what I would be saying if there were any actual AIs on above or below the surface of the earth at the present time. Unfortunately, there are not. The number of actually existing AIs still sits at its historic and all time record level of zero. But I guess there is nowhere to go but up from there. And for Pete’s sake how many times do I have to say this, machines can’t learn. I am beginning to think I might be wrong about this. It is actually people that can’t learn, they never learn.
