There is nothing magical or mysterious or most importantly intelligent going on here. This is modern computers performing (calculating/computing) exactly as they were designed and programmed to perform, and computing probabilities based on huge amounts of data. The fact that these computations are applied to a problem some consider philosophical, others medical, others psychological, and myself as all of the above does not change the fact that they are nothing more than computations. Algorithmically driven, fully mechanical, fully machine. No intelligence, no learning (a thing which machines cannot do, logically cannot do, not ever, for if they did they would no longer be machines), at base nothing but simple (truly it is really not that complicated) brute force math and statistics applied to tons and tons of data. Implying there is some “intelligence” behind these predictions may make for interesting discussion and a good read, but it does a grave disservice to the reality of what is actually happening. Modern computers are very good at computing, and they keep getting better. Truly we named them appropriately. They are not very good (none have yet ever) at being intelligent, and they are totally (logically) incapable of learning.
