Yes, always on the brink. We have been on this brink for the past 15 years, just as we have been on the brink of AI and the singularity. Much like its oft discussed but ne’r existing brother in hype AI, quantum computing continues to not exist, yet is always just around the corner. The corner grows ever further away, as what is “just around it” gets bigger and bigger. Before long we are going to need a corner so large it will be confused for a wall or a door. No doubt this hypothetical wall will be on the brink of being scaled, and the door on the brink of being opened. Sadly, we will remain where we always have, on the ground, locked out. Oh well, maybe next year, or in the next five, or for sure within the decade, definitely this century, with absolute metaphysical certitude in the next 500 years. Or maybe never?
